Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, celebrates the news of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States reaching Southern Texas. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law. This declared all enslaved individuals in the southern rebellion states “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”
Juneteenth has been a significant holiday for many Black Americans for 155 years and is often celebrated with cookout gatherings, festivals, church events, and storytelling.

2) Spirit of the Town x Ethnic Ties Presents: The Black Oakland Tour
Join us at The Black Oakland Tour as we combine our love for the rich history and culture of Oakland, CA through a lens of the Black experience! As the center for the "Black Renaissance of the West" in the 1960's and 70's, Oakland used to be considered an epicenter for the Black experience in the United States. From a bustling population of 47% Black residents to our current demographic of just over 23%, the changing tide of the city has seriously effected the Black population for a number of reasons.
3) Juneteenth Jubilee 2021 @ The Overlook hosted by Hon. Loren Taylor
Councilmember Loren Taylor is excited to bring you his first Annual Juneteenth Jubilee.
At this event, we will celebrate Black Excellence and also fundraise for three organizations that are transforming lives in Oakland’s Black community. Sponsors of this grand Juneteenth event will have an opportunity to showcase their dedication to the success of East Oakland/Bay Area residents, network with community leaders, and increase their local visibility, all while having some fun.
4) A Celebration of Black Excellence ~ BBQ Thursday
Kirby, the owner of Rebel Fare hosted A Celebration of Black Excellence ~ BBQ Thursday, she is an aspiring talented chef and black woman here in the bay area! Join us on Juneteenth for the official launch of the Black Liberation Walking Tour.
The BLWT is a community-led cultural asset map that celebrates Hoover Durant’s multigenerational Black history and culture, asserts resident voice, and documents sites of the cultural and historical importance of our neighborhood.
